Bike-cycle

A new trail was recently finished near our house.  We decided that it would be a fun family activity to start riding our bikes on the trail in the evening.  So, we bought a bike for Aaron and a trailer for Jenna.  When we were looking for a bike for Aaron, Jenna kept pointing out “bike-cycles”.

She loves to ride and almost every morning when she wakes up, she asks me if we’re taking a bike ride!

Lunch with the Elephants

Yesterday Jenna and I packed up the car, ran some errands, then took a special trip through the drive-thru at McDonalds.  We drove to Power and Light in KC, then parked, unloaded, and then walked until we found a crowd.  We were there to have lunch with the Ringling Bros circus elephants!!!

We unfolded a blanket, sat,  and then opened our lunch.

The fun began shortly after we started eating.  We saw five large tables, each filled to the brim with food (bananas, apples, carrots, corn, and bread).

Then, the clowns came out. There were two clowns. One was a huge man, with huge muscles and huge feet.  The other was a goofy, simpleton.

They were a great pair and the kids loved them – especially this one!

The ELEPHANTS!!!!!!!!!!

We watched the elephants eat, and eat, and eat. They were quick and messy and majestic! One of the circus workers answered questions from the crowd.  She told us that elephants in captivity can live to be 60, 70, or even 80 years old.  Their favorite food is bread.  One of the elephants, Asia, (one of the ones on the end in the picture above) paints a picture before every show.  They youngest member of their program was born in April…and is named April! She’s not old enough yet to join the show, but she’s already being trained (on a side note, PETA also informed us that they use some fairly cruel methods to train their baby elephants, which made me sad, but they were kind enough to hold off their protest until after the show, so I didn’t have to wrestle with any moral issues and could focus on watching the joy on my baby’s face).

Speaking of joy on my baby’s face, I’m afraid she might be turning into a clown!

The elephants ate most of their food, then they each got a whole watermelon for dessert. They stomped them in half, then ate them. It was quite a treat for them and a treat for us to watch!

Now for the not so fun part.  The elephants didn’t smell all that great and they made a HUGE mess while they ate.

First Day at School

First off, sorry for not blogging lately. I just haven’t felt like it, it has been too hot and the last couple weeks I was finishing up a big project at work, so I was trying to sneak in a little time on the computer here and there for work, which didn’t leave much time for blogging.  Hopefully things have calmed down a bit (and cooled down), so I’ll be able to get posts up a bit more frequently again.

Jenna went to her first day of school today. A nearby preschool has a one morning a week program for 1 year olds, called Discovery Days. We decided that Jenna would love to meet new friends and would benefit from the social interaction, so we signed her up over the summer. Yesterday we took her on a tour of her classroom and met her teachers and one other classmate.  She loved it and did not want to leave, so we were hopeful that she’d still be excited about it the next day. She was!

Getting ready to leave for school with her cool new backpack

We went inside the room and she took off without a look back at Mom. :)

Checking out the chairs and books under the playhouse

There are 4 or 5 girls in her class and 2 boys.  At least 2 of the girls are born in November, just before her, so they’re pretty close in age. Of course, she’s head and shoulders taller than everyone.

After class we came home to tell Aaron about her day. He asked her what she did and she said, “Frog, sit”.  They assign animals to each kid and they have a mat for the kids to sit on.  Her animal is the frog. I was impressed that she remembered because the instructors told us that usually the 1 year old class doesn’t remember until spring.  She also told me that Miss Andie changed her diaper and she kept saying Mary Lou and Andie (those are her teacher’s names).  I asked her if she met any friends and she said yes, but she didn’t tell me any of their names. I met most of their parents during orientation (we went to it while the kids were in class), so I mentioned a few of their names and she repeated them after me.

During lunch, I took out the picture of her classroom and playground that the teachers had given us the day before and she pointed out a few of the fun things that she did, like play with toys and on the playground – with a playhouse and some dump trucks.

Bed Update

Jenna's had two successful naps and one overnight in her toddler bed. I don't think she's realized that she can climb out on her own (she does crawl in by herself). Since we are in the middle of redoing her room there isn't much for her to get into (as long as she stays out of the closet), so if she does get up, it will probably be ok. Once she learns how to open doors though...that could be a problem!

Yikes!

Last night Jenna woke up screaming. I waited a few minutes, then went into her room to make sure everything was ok. She was fine, so I gave her a hug and kiss and tucked her back into bed. No sooner than I turned around was she screaming and standing. I told her that if she wasn't tired she could read her book or play with the doll in her crib and I went back to bed. Just as my head hit the pillow I heard a huge thud and then silence. Talk about making my heart race. I don't think I've ever moved so fast. Aaron was right behind me. By the time we got to her room she was screaming again and seemed perfectly fine (other than the screaming which still obviously had to do with her not wanting to go to bed). I was scared to let her back in the crib since she could get out (and she evidentially doesn't have a good landing technique), so into bed with us she went. This stopped the screaming, but she still wasn't tired and she kept putting her hands and feet all over us. Since Aaron had to work in the morning, I took her out of the room.  I decided that I'd have to put her in the crib in order for either of us to get sleep, but she still didn't want in there. I ended up laying by the crib until she fell asleep. All in all the ordeal lasted 2 hours and did she sleep in? Of course not!

We'd planned to move her to a toddler bed between 2 and 2.5, but that plan changed last night. Aaron's changing the crib to a bed as I type. Wish us luck. I am not overly optimistic about it, but it beats her doing a swan dive from the crib rail!

Bon Voyage!

We're about to leave on Roadtrip 2010! Jenna and I are going with Mom and Gram on a trip to West Virginia...and possibly some other places. Gram is trying to check off her last 2 states to visit and WV is one of them (the other is South Dakota). If the road tripping goes well, we are going to swing south and make a loop to return home otherwise we will probably cross the WV border, turn around and make a beeline for KS. I'll try to keep y'all updated!

P.S. The picture is from the Osage City parade a few weeks ago. Jenna is showing off her loot.

These are the days!

We’ve been rather busy for the last few weeks, so I decided Jenna and I would have a day at home, just the two of us. This morning we read books, cleaned, did laundry, danced, cooked, drew, blew bubbles, and had a quick photo shoot.  I even got a great workout in during her nap! I love days like this! I’m not sure what we’ll do this afternoon, but you can bet it will be relaxing!
